THE MENTOR+ APPROACH

A modern approach to mentoring, built on research, experience and practical application

Creating impact through mentoring
Mentoring has enormous potential to support leadership development, talent growth, knowledge sharing and organisational learning. Realising that potential, however, requires more than good intentions and a great launch. It requires a clear purpose, thoughtful programme design, engaged participants and ongoing support throughout the mentoring journey.

The Mentor+™ Approach & Methodology was developed to help organisations create the conditions that enable mentoring to thrive and generate meaningful value for both participants and the organisation.

Drawing on more than 25 years of mentoring practice, research and programme experience, the Mentor+ Approach brings together the elements that consistently distinguish successful mentoring programmes from those that struggle to achieve lasting impact.

It helps organisations move beyond mentoring as an isolated activity and towards mentoring as a strategic capability that strengthens learning cultures, leadership development, knowledge sharing and organisational performance.

Modern Mentoring - learning goes both ways

Traditional mentoring is often described as a relationship where an experienced mentor shares knowledge with a less experienced mentee. While experience remains valuable, we believe mentoring is most effective when it is viewed as a mutual learning partnership.

In Modern Mentoring, both mentor and mentee contribute, learn and grow through dialogue, reflection and shared exploration. Mentors bring experience, perspective and insight, while mentees contribute fresh ideas, new perspectives and different experiences.

This creates richer conversations, deeper learning and greater value for everyone involved.

Building a Mentoring Culture

Modern Mentoring is not just about running a mentoring programme. It is about building a mentoring culture that lasts.

When mentoring becomes embedded in how your organisation learns, develops and leads, it moves beyond isolated initiatives and becomes a strategic driver of growth. A strong mentoring culture strengthens leadership capability, supports inclusion and belonging, and ensures continuous talent development at all levels.

Building a mentoring culture means:

  • Embedding mentoring in leadership development and talent strategies
  • Creating psychological safety and trust across functions and hierarchies
  • Equipping mentors and mentees with the right skills and frameworks
  • Ensuring clear governance, structure and measurable outcomes
  • Aligning mentoring with organisational purpose, values and business goals

A mentoring culture is visible in everyday behaviour; leaders act as role models, knowledge flows across silos and learning becomes continuous – not occasional.

Building a mentoring culture is an investment in long-term capability.

Not a short-term initiative.

Mentor's Many Roles & Mentor+Game™ - effective mentors adapt to different situations

Many mentoring approaches describe the mentor primarily as a listener, coach or advisor. Our experience suggests that effective mentoring requires a broader and more flexible approach. Different situations call for different forms of support. At times, a mentor may act as a discussion partner, coach or critical friend. In other situations, the mentor may share knowledge, challenge assumptions, provide encouragement, expand networks or open doors to new opportunities.

The Mentor's Many Roles framework helps mentors understand how to adapt their contribution to the needs of the mentee and the context of the conversation. To support learning and reflection, we have developed the Mentor+Game™ – an interactive learning tool that brings mentoring roles, challenges and opportunities to life through dialogue, exploration and shared learning. Together, the framework and the game help mentors become more aware, flexible and effective in their role.

Additionally, we introduce mentees to the Mentor's Many Roles framework. This helps them better understand the different ways a mentor can support their learning, development and career journey. By creating a shared understanding of mentoring, the framework encourages a more active role for the mentee and supports a mutual learning partnership in which both mentor and mentee contribute to the success of the relationship.

How we define Modern Mentoring

From the perspective of the participants as:
a learning partnership between two people with different levels or kinds of experience, where both can achieve new learning, new insight and personal growth. Mentoring creates synergy between two people.

From the perspective of the organisation as:
a strategic development activity that supports the organisation's vision, goals and values as well as the participants' development needs and wishes.

Programme design excellence - creating mentoring programmes that deliver impact

Mentoring programmes are often more complex than they first appear. Success depends not only on mentors and mentees, but also on organisational context, stakeholder support, programme structures, communication, participant preparation and many other interconnected factors.

The Mentor+ Approach provides practical frameworks that help organisations navigate this complexity. By taking a systematic approach to programme design, organisations can make informed decisions, engage the right stakeholders and avoid many of the challenges that prevent mentoring programmes from achieving their full potential.

The result is mentoring programmes that create meaningful learning experiences while contributing to wider organisational objectives.

Research, Experience and Continuous Learning
The Mentor+ Approach is informed by practical experience, participant feedback, interviews, surveys and continuous evaluation.

Rather than relying on assumptions about what makes mentoring effective, we have continuously explored what helps mentoring relationships thrive, what creates meaningful learning and what enables programmes to generate lasting organisational impact.

By combining insights from practice, research and ongoing learning, the methodology continues to evolve and adapt to the changing needs of organisations, mentors and mentees.

The result is an approach that combines evidence-informed thinking with practical application.

Supporting Mentoring at Every Level
The Mentor+ Approach is designed to support everyone involved in a mentoring initiative – from programme managers and facilitators to mentors, mentees and organisational stakeholders.

Rather than focusing on a single aspect of mentoring, the methodology provides a coherent framework that connects programme design, participant development, practical resources and ongoing support.

This creates a shared language, a common understanding and a consistent approach across the entire mentoring journey, helping organisations build mentoring programmes that are scalable, sustainable and aligned with organisational goals.

Advancing the practice of mentoring

The Mentor+ Approach & Methodology reflects our ongoing commitment to understanding what makes mentoring truly effective.

It combines practical experience, evidence-informed thinking and proven frameworks into an approach that helps organisations create mentoring initiatives that are purposeful, engaging and impactful.

Our ambition is simple: to help organisations move beyond mentoring as an activity and towards mentoring as a strategic capability that develops people, strengthens relationships and supports sustainable learning cultures.
