Mentoring the mentors
Mentoring the mentors is a process that takes place in parallel with the mentors mentoring the mentees. This way the sessions for the mentors will focus on real, live experiences that the mentors have with their mentees.
The main purpose is to provide a safe space for
- Deeper exploration of what it means to be a good mentor.
- Defining and clarifying boundaries for mentoring and setting ethical ground rules.
- Supporting the mentors in managing challenges and grow stronger in their mentor role.

Mentoring the mentors - a supervision process
The sessions will focus on the topics they bring to the sessions and
- Helping the mentors grow and develop their mentoring skills - the formative aspect
- Helping the mentors understand boundaries and ethics of mentoring – the normative aspect
- Providing encouragement and emotional support – the restorative aspect
The mentoring sessions can be organised as individual sessions or for smaller groups of mentors (3-5 participants). Often, we design a process that includes a combination of individual and group sessions, so the mentors can also learn from and with each other.
To prepare the mentors for these mentoring sessions, we provide an introductory session for all your mentors to give them an introduction to mentoring and what to expect from the mentoring the mentor sessions. Alternatively, we can offer training for the mentors before the start of your mentoring programme.
Topics for the mentor sessions can include
- Understanding the skills needed to be a good mentor
- Providing insight into the Mentor’s Many Roles
- Developing self-insight into own style, values, biases and talents in the mentor role
- To ensure the right motivation and engagement for mentoring
- Providing the mentors with tools for mentoring
- Guiding mentors in understanding their own power and influence
- Helping them make their intangible knowledge and skills explicit
However, every session will be focused on the specific needs of the mentor and the challenges they may be facing with their mentees.
