MENTOR+GAME™ WORKSHOPS

Experience mentoring through dialogue, reflection and play

Understanding mentoring is one thing. Experiencing mentoring is something entirely different. Learning how to become effective mentors and mentees is what the Mentor+Game™ is all about.

The Mentor+Game™ Workshop is an interactive and engaging learning experience that helps mentors, mentees, leaders and other relevant stakeholders explore the many dimensions of Modern Mentoring through dialogue, reflection and practical application. Participants develop a shared understanding of mentoring, learn how to apply the ten mentor roles in different situations and strengthen their ability to create meaningful learning conversations.

10 mentor roles infographic

The Mentor+Game™ is built on the principle that mentoring skills are developed through experience, reflection and dialogue.

At the heart of the workshop is Mentor’s Many Roles™ – the ten situational mentor roles that form a core part of the Mentor+ Approach. The roles make mentoring tangible, actionable and engaging by illustrating the many different ways mentors can contribute to learning, development and growth.

Rather than presenting mentoring as a fixed set of behaviours, the workshop encourages participants to explore how different mentor roles can be applied in different situations and how mentors and mentees can work together to create meaningful learning conversations.

Mentor's Many Roles™

The Mentor+Game™ is built around the ten situational mentor roles, each representing a different way of supporting learning and development.

By exploring the roles, participants gain a deeper understanding of:

  • The many ways mentors can create value
  • How mentoring differs from coaching, management and training
  • When different mentor roles may be most effective
  • How mentees can actively influence and shape mentoring conversations
  • How mentors and mentees share responsibility for successful mentoring relationships

The roles provide a practical language for discussing mentoring and help participants develop greater awareness of what is happening within mentoring conversations.

Learning Through Experience

The workshop combines facilitated dialogue, practical exercises, reflection and the Mentor+Game™ learning process.

Participants are encouraged to share experiences, discuss real-life situations and explore how different mentoring approaches can support learning and development.

The workshop creates a highly engaging learning environment where participants learn not only from the facilitator but also from one another.

Why Experiential Learning Matters

Many mentoring programmes begin with presentations, models and guidelines in an one-way presentation. While these provide a useful foundation, mentoring is ultimately a relational skill that develops through practice, reflection and dialogue.

The Mentor+Game™ is based on the principle that people learn mentoring most effectively when they actively engage with real situations, exchange perspectives and reflect on their experiences. Rather than simply being told what good mentoring looks like, participants are invited to explore, discuss and apply mentoring concepts in a safe and engaging learning environment.

The workshop encourages participants to think critically about their own assumptions, preferences and behaviours while learning from the experiences of others. This creates deeper understanding, stronger engagement and greater confidence in applying mentoring skills in practice.

By combining conceptual understanding with dialogue, reflection and active participation, the Mentor+Game™ helps transform mentoring from an abstract concept into a practical capability that participants can immediately apply in their mentoring relationships.

A Proven Learning Approach – Used Around the World

Mentor’s Many Roles™ was developed in 2004 to make mentoring easier to understand, discuss and apply in practice. Building on this foundation, the Mentor+Game™ was launched in 2009 as an interactive and experiential learning approach that enables participants to explore mentoring through dialogue, reflection and practical application.

Over the past 20 years, the framework has helped thousands of mentors and mentees develop a deeper understanding of mentoring and create more effective mentoring relationships.

Today, the Mentor+Game™ is used by organisations, universities and professional networks around the world. More than 15,000 mentors and mentees have experienced the workshop and used the ten mentor roles to strengthen mentoring conversations, enhance learning and build mentoring competence.
